Brazilian brilliance in Charlotte
Fluminense pulled off the biggest upset of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Round of 16, defeating Inter Milan 2–0 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Goals from Germán Cano (3’) and Hércules (90’) sealed the win for the Brazilian side, eliminating the UEFA Champions League runners-up and sending Fluminense into the final eight.
Efficiency over possession
Despite Inter Milan controlling 68% of possession, Fluminense created the more dangerous chances. Veteran goalkeeper Fábio, at 44 years old, delivered a standout performance, while defenders Thiago Silva and Ignacio kept Lautaro Martínez and company at bay.
A possible rematch with Manchester City
Fluminense will now face the winner of Manchester City vs Al Hilal in the quarterfinals. If City advance, it would set up a rematch of the 2023 Club World Cup final, where Pep Guardiola’s side defeated Fluminense 4–0 in Jeddah.
Cano makes history with Fluminense
Germán Cano’s early header was the second-fastest goal of the tournament and made him the oldest player to score in a knockout round, at 37 years and 179 days.
